25th African Union Summit on the theme “2016: Africa Year of Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women “
The 26th Ordinary Summit of the African Union will take place from 21st-31st January, 2016, at the AU Headquarters in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. 2016 marks the African Year of Human Rights with particular focus on women, to commemorate and celebrate significant milestones in Africa’s continental human rights history. In 2016, the African Children’s Charter will be 26 years old. It will also be the 35th anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and also the 10th anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peaoples’ Rights. The African Union Organs with Human Rights mandate have made significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights on the continent. As there are continuing human rights challenges on the continent, very significant strides have been made and are worthy to be mentionned.
The Declaration of 2016 as the Africa Year of Human Rights will provide further opportunity to consolidate the achievments made over the years, ensure a better coordination of human rights bodies on the continent, and move towards the establishment of a true human rights culture on the continent.
