The Continental Commemoration of the Day of the African Child took place from 14-16 June, in Malawi at the Bingu International Conference Centre. Prior to the main event on 16 June, Media and Journalists have been trained during two days (14-15 June) with skills and knowledge to be better advocates of children rights. The Official event on 16 June started with a march to pay tribute to the children of Soweto who were killed in 1976 while protesting against the poor quality of education during the apartheid regime. It was a child-led event during which an inter-generational dialogue between children representatives and duty bearers highlighted the fundamental role of Education to ensure that all children are given equal chances and access so that no one is left behind.
Children handed their statement to Hon. Dr. Jean Kalirani, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare.
