The Central African Republic becomes the 48th African Union member state to ratify the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The country has ratified the Charter on 07/07/2016 and has submitted its ratification instrument to the African Union on 01/08/2016.
The Committee undertook a visit in the country from 15-21 December 2014, to advocate for the ratification of the Charter, and a greater protection for children during the crisis. To date, the Charter has been ratified by 48 African Union Member States. Seven (7 )countries have not ratified the Charter: Kingdom of Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Tunisia, Somalia, Sao Tome and Principe, and Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. With a view of ensuring universal ratification of the Charter, the ACERWC has been engaging with the Governments in the respective countries. As a result, the Kingdom of Morocco, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo promised to expedite the ratification process of the Charter. In addition, the ACERWC has carried out advocacy missions to Tunisia and Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. In the year 2017, the ACERWC wishes to double its effort in engaging these seven Member States so that they ratify the African Children’s Charter.
